Reishi
Ganoderma lucidum
The first recorded use of Reishi was made by the Chinese Emperor Shennong (2697-2599 BCE),
who was the mythological father of Chinese medicine.

He is said to have tasted hundreds of herbs and mushrooms to confirm their medicinal properties.

After trying Reishi, he claimed it was the “elixir of life” and a remedy for all diseases.

Appearance: Young specimens appear like a small reddish column with a pale apical base. Only with age does the cap, which sits on the stalk, develop in a fan or kidney shape.
The cap of the Reishi can reach a diameter of 15 centimeters.
It has a shiny, red to purple shimmering resin layer on the upper side.
The flesh of the mushroom is whitish in young specimens, brownish in older ones, and very hard. The reddish to blackish brown stalk is sometimes longer, sometimes flatter, depending on environmental conditions.

Warning: temporary detoxification reactions such as dizziness and diarrhea may occur when taking Reishi. Caution is advised when taken concurrently with blood thinners.

Cooking:
Reishi is unsuitable as a food due to its hard consistency and bitterness.

Health:

The mushroom has been in the focus of cancer research since the 1980s when the respected Japanese scientist and physician Dr. Fukumi Morishige began his work on the anti-cancer effects of Reishi.
